My NMSC

Information for Current Students

In 2008, the NMSC is introducing an online presence for all units and electronic submission of assignments. The NMSC is using the learning management system Sakai, which is hosted by the University of New England. Each Marine Science and Management unit undertaken at the NMSC has an information page on Sakai (see below for instructions about logging into Sakai). This page provides some details/materials that are needed for the unit such as the study guide and any additional material, assessment information, a calendar and a forum for discussion of subjects relating to the unit.

Students will have access to each of the units that they are enrolled in. Please note that as this system is still being rolled out for NMSC units, enrolment updates are still being made. It is expected that students will have access to all the units they are enrolled in by the end of March 2008.

e-Submission of Assignments

All assignments must now be submitted electronically unless advised otherwise by your course coordinator. The e-Submission page is reached via the ‘Assignments and e-Submission’ link on the left-side menu of the Sakai page for each unit.

The 2008 version of e-Submission allows a range of file types (e.g. Word, pdf etc.) to be submitted as well as multiple files for each assignment. Your unit coordinator will have enabled the system to accept any and all appropriate file types for each assignment.

Following submission, all text-based assignments will automatically be submitted to ‘TurnItIn’ for originality checking. TurnItIn is a powerful software application that is used to determine the originality of your work. This is done by comparing text from your work against thousands of online websites, databases, journals and other students’ assignments. TurnItIn generates a detailed originality report for each assignment submitted. This report will then be used by the Unit Coordinator to check your assignment for originality (note: TurnItIn also checks your assignment against others being submitted at the same time). For assignments submitted electronically, there is no requirement to submit a signed Plagiarism Form. By submitting your assignment, you acknowledge that you are familiar with your university’s plagiarism policy. Both UNE and SCU have very similar plagiarism policies which are available, in full, at their web sites (see links in side-bar).

Where assignments cannot be submitted electronically, signed Plagiarism Declaration Forms are still required to be submitted with the assignment.

One of the great advantages of the electronic submission system is that it allows you to check the originality of your own work. Thus, you can submit your assignment as many times as you like to TurnItIn until you are satisfied with the originality report. Originality reports should be returned to you in under 15 minutes, however, you should allow at least 30 minutes in order to be sure your originality report will be returned before you submit your final assignment for marking.
