The Centre commenced operations in 2002 and features a 75 seat lecture theatre, teaching laboratory accommodating 60 students, a large research laboratory with support rooms , aquarium room, boat and scuba area, experimental tank farm, inshore research vessel, computer laboratory, postgraduate work-stations, a PC2 laboratory, controlled environment rooms and meeting rooms. The NMSC draws water straight from the ocean, providing seawater throughout the building for research projects.

The Centre is adjacent to the Pacific Bay Resort and is also in close proximity to a small general store, bar, restaurant, and the picturesque Charlesworth Bay Beach.
